| Installing PageSentry | Previous | Next Contents |
To install PageSentry, simply copy the PageSentry application to your hard disk. You may want to copy the entire PageSentry package for easy access to the HTML User's Guide, example AppleScript applications, etc.Note: As mentioned in the Requirements, we suggest that you run PageSentry on a machine other than an Internet or intranet server that you are monitoring.
Before starting PageSentry, verify that Open Transport (or MacTCP) has been properly installed and that the computer has a dedicated network connection. A dedicated connection is technically not required for PageSentry to operate, but without it, PageSentry may incorrectly report an error because it is unable to connect to your Internet servers due to problems starting a dial-up or other part-time Internet connection.
To get started, simply double-click the PageSentry icon to launch the application. A blank Status Window will open, as shown in Figure 1.
Auto-Startup Under Mac OS X
In most cases, it is convenient to have PageSentry launched automatically any time the Mac is started. Under Classic Mac OS, this is as easy as making an alias to the PageSentry application and dropping it into the "System:Startup Items" folder. Under OS X, however, the process is slightly more complicated, as Unix-style shell scripts are required to launch PageSentry with root access. (See the "Mac OS X Usage Note" for more details about the need for root access under OS X.)When you choose "Make OS X Startup Items" from the PageSentry "File" menu, PageSentry will create it's own Startup Items, including the folder and files needed. If these files already exist, PageSentry will delete the old files and create new ones, making moving PageSentry to another folder or switching to another copy of PageSentry much easier. Any time you need to move or rename PageSentry, simply perform the "Make OS X Startup Items" action again and the startup files will be recreated.
Once these files have been created PageSentry should be launched automatically at system startup.
