The Connection Sentry type is a generic server test that functions at a higher level than a simple Ping, but is not as sophisticated as the more specific Sentry types. A Connection Sentry attempts to establish a connection with the remote server, and once the connection is made, it is immediately dropped. This effectively tests that the remote server is on, is connected, has working basic TCP/IP network functions, and some server application is running that is "listening" for connections. Essentially, this Sentry type offers a robust test that can be used to check virtually any TCP/IP server application.
To configure the Sentry, fill in the appropriate fields. In addition to the common configuration options, the Connection Sentry has the following options:
- Machine Name
- This is the name or IP Address of the machine that you would like to test, in the form "mymachine.yourcom.com".
- Port Number
- This is the port number of the service you would like to test. Since Connection Sentries can test a number of different types of services that typically run on different TCP/IP ports, the default port will almost certainly be incorrect for the server you are testing. Check the server documentation or configuration to see what the correct TCP/IP port it is using for incoming connections.
