Connection SentryPrevious | Next
Contents

The Connection Sentry type is a generic server test that functions at a higher level than a simple Ping, but is not as sophisticated as the more specific Sentry types. A Connection Sentry attempts to establish a connection with the remote server, and once the connection is made, it is immediately dropped. This effectively tests that the remote server is on, is connected, has working basic TCP/IP network functions, and some server application is running that is "listening" for connections. Essentially, this Sentry type offers a robust test that can be used to check virtually any TCP/IP server application.

Figure 18: Configuring a new Connection Sentry.

To configure the Sentry, fill in the appropriate fields. In addition to the common configuration options, the Connection Sentry has the following options:

Machine Name
This is the name or IP Address of the machine that you would like to test, in the form "mymachine.yourcom.com".

Port Number
This is the port number of the service you would like to test. Since Connection Sentries can test a number of different types of services that typically run on different TCP/IP ports, the default port will almost certainly be incorrect for the server you are testing. Check the server documentation or configuration to see what the correct TCP/IP port it is using for incoming connections.
