John's Blog: Rumpus 7.2 Beta 2

April 2, 2012

Rumpus 7.2 is another evolutionary update to Rumpus... The general feel of the server is the same, but there are some really nice new features that will make a big difference in overall usability.

HTML5 Drag & Drop

Users of Safari, FireFox or Chrome can upload a file just by dragging it from their desktop into the Rumpus WFM file listing. The same is true for drop shipping of files and file request uploads. Really, I don't think uploading can get much easier.

Drop Ship & File Request New Features

Drop shipments can now be password protected, and the sender, when sending the file, can enter the e-mail address of the person who should be notified when the file gets picked up. File requests can now be made re-usable, which, combined with drag & drop uploads, makes guest uploads incredibly simple.

Open Directory Rewrite

Open Directory support in Rumpus has been rewritten to be both more efficient and more reliable. You can also now use OD groups to differentiate user access in Rumpus.

Instant Access Bookmarks

Similar to Drop Shipping and File Requests, it's now possible to generate a URL that instantly starts a full Rumpus session. For servers where data security isn't crucial, users can make a bookmark to your site that gives them instant access with a single click.

Try the Beta ...

If you use the file upload, drop shipping or Open Directory features of Rumpus, this is a worthwhile release to install. The improvements are significant, and worth making sure they work exactly the way you need. If problems exist, now is the time to get them corrected. It is easy to revert back to a previous version if you have trouble (just keep the Rumpus 7.1.X application handy and launch it to revert), so serious server down time is unlikely.

Additional Notes

OS X 10.4 is no longer supported (sorry!), but Rumpus 7.2 will run on OS X 10.5, including both PPC and Intel Macs.

To use Open Directory authenticateion, OS X 10.6 or later is required. Also, note that Open Directory authentication is now a "Pro" feature.

The Beta 2 download includes the portions of the Rumpus documentation which have been updated. Most notably, the "Web File Manager" has new sections describing file upload options and Instant Access Bookmarks.
