John's Blog: Rumpus 7.2 Beta 3

May 2, 2012

Consider Rumpus 7.2 Beta 3 a "Final Candidate". Other than updated documentation and language translations, this release is feature complete and has been tested extensively. If you are an experienced Rumpus administrator and are interested in drag & drop uploads, use drop shipping, serve images or video files, use the Web-based user administration function or use Open Directory authentication, this build is for you.

There are 2 big advantages to installing the Beta ("Final Candidate") release. First, you get access to the new features early. Second, and more importantly, if the new features don't work exactly the way you want, you have a chance to provide feedback so we can get them corrected or improved so that they meet your needs. I'm looking forward to your feedback!

Important Note: Rumpus 7.2 is a free upgrade for anyone who originally purchased a license for Rumpus 6.2 or later. If your most recent license was bought for 6.1 or before, an upgrade will be required. To upgrade, visit the Upgrading Page. If your serial number begins "RP-86-" or "RR-86-", contact me at support@maxum.com to arrange for an extended test serial number.

For a complete list of the updates to Rumpus, see the "Read Me" article in the Rumpus package, or my previous post about Beta 2. Here's what's new in Beta 3:

Content Wrapper Updates

The "Content Wrapper" display option has been optimized and now allows administrators to choose between 3 different display types (for video files played back via QuickTime, image files in standard formats, and other file types displayed in a scrolling frame). For each content type, a display size can now be set, allowing you to customize the content wrapper page to the content on your server. Content wrappers are particularly useful for drop shipping media files, allowing images, movies and other media to be displayed in-browser, rather than downloaded to the recipient's hard drive, when a drop ship URL is clicked. Since the content wrapper is customized for different file types, the new options can be found on the "File Types" window in Rumpus.

Web-Based Administration

The new Rumpus Web-based server administration module has been updated from earlier beta releases. The biggest changes can be found in the "Activity Monitor", which now includes much of the traditional FileWatch functionality directly within the WFM interface. To enable Web browser server administration, see the options on the Network Settings window "Remote Admin -> Web Browser" tab.

Web-Based User Account Management

The Web browser based user account management function has been updated based on the work done in the general server administration function. Functionality remains similar to Rumpus 7.1 and earlier (user accounts can be created, edited and deleted), but the interface is more streamlined and intuitive.

Drag & Drop Uploads Updates

The new drag & drop uploads option has been further refined. See the Web Settings window, "Uploads" tab, for options.
